M1 boosts network speed to 1Gbps with Nokia’s Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) Solution

SINGAPORE, 17 December 2018 – M1 Limited (M1) and Nokia today announced that they have completed the Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) small cells trial and achieved close to 1Gbps network download speed.

With the high adoption of advanced smart devices in Singapore, customer demand for data continues to grow, driven by faster networks and high-bandwidth mobile applications for social media, as well as video and music streaming services. M1 continues to invest in expanding capacity and delivering superior network performance to support this growing demand for data services.

During the trial, Nokia’s advanced LAA Air Scale small cell, which aggregates up to four carriers and combines up to four multiple transmission paths, achieved a download peak speed close to 1Gbps.  Leveraging on the advanced interworking capabilities of LAA and precise planning and design carried out by M1’s engineers and Nokia’s service experts, the solution provides 4.5G technology in the unlicensed 5GHz spectrum band, which complements well with M1’s existing licensed band and is able to co-exist with WiFi networks using the same 5GHz spectrum.

M1’s Heterogeneous Network (HetNet), the largest in Singapore with more than 500 integrated small cells and WiFi access points deployed at traffic hotspots throughout Singapore including MRT/ LRT stations, bus interchanges, major commercials buildings and malls and other popular outdoor areas, will also be enhanced with Nokia’s LAA capabilities.

With the advanced LAA solution, M1 is able to improve data bandwidth at high-traffic hotspots, minimise network congestion and continue to deliver high data speed to M1 customers at crowded places. The deployment will also enrich customers’ experience by ensuring a seamless coverage and uninterrupted mobile service across M1’s cellular and WiFi network.

Mr Denis Seek, Chief Technical Officer, M1 said, “Through this latest trial with our long-term technology partner Nokia, we reiterate our commitment in applying latest technologies to provide our customers with the best possible cellular and WiFi experience on the move. M1 customers will continue to enjoy an even better user experience through M1’s advanced 4G+ mobile network.”

“We are thrilled to achieve another new technology milestone that differentiates M1 as an innovation leader in the region. With this live network trial, Nokia has proven once again that our technology is helping M1 build the networks of the future, transforming and enriching the overall end-user experience.” said Mr Mark Atkinson, Head of Small Cells, Nokia.

Earlier this year, M1 and Nokia announced plans to conduct Nokia’s first 5G small cell trial in Southeast Asia to showcase demand-driven 5G use cases in selected vertical industries, which marked an important milestone in M1 and Nokia’s joint efforts in staying at the forefront of technology developments. Last year, M1 together with Nokia, also deployed Southeast Asia’s first nationwide commercial Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, to catalyse smart solutions innovation, supporting Singapore’s transformation into a Smart Nation.

M1 to trial Nokia’s first 5G small cell in Southeast Asia

SINGAPORE, 22 June 2018 – M1 Limited (M1) and Nokia today announced plans to conduct Nokia’s first 5G small cell trial in Southeast Asia. The two companies will also showcase demand-driven 5G use cases in selected vertical industries which require dedicated small cell capacity and very low latency IoT connectivity.

Leveraging on M1’s engineering experience in deploying an extensive 4.5G Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) at traffic hotspots throughout Singapore, this 5G small cell trial marks another important milestone in M1 and Nokia’s joint efforts in staying at the forefront of the  latest technology developments. The findings from this live trial will provide valuable practical learnings for the commercial deployment of 5G small cells in a dense cell grid architecture and operating at very high 5G frequency bands.

In 2017, M1 together with Nokia, deployed Southeast Asia’s first nationwide commercial Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, to catalyse smart solutions innovation, supporting Singapore’s transformation into a Smart Nation. Today, M1 and its partners have available solutions such as smart energy management for buildings, environmental monitoring, asset tracking and fleet management which are well supported by the NB-IoT network. In the coming years, many more IoT and smart solutions will be developed, such as autonomous drone control, which demand greater reliability and much lower network latency. As 5G specifications support not only Enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) but also deliver Ultra Reliable Low Latency Communication (URLLC) and support massive Machine Type Communication (mMTC), M1 and Nokia plan to evaluate and showcase new IoT use cases that require a highly responsive 5G small cell network as soon as the latest 3GPP standards are finalised over the next two years.

“With M1’s NB-IoT network and largest HetNet deployment nationwide today, we are well positioned to harness exciting new 5G capabilities and support extremely reliable and highly responsive advanced network infrastructure on our dense cell grid architecture. The practical learning from early 5G field trial is critical for the success of developing high performance and demand-driven 5G services for our customers in future and enables us to play a key role in Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives,” said Mr Denis Seek, Chief Technical Officer, M1.

“We are thrilled to continue to partner with M1 to conduct a 5G trial, including Nokia’s Southeast Asia’s first 5G small cell trial in 4Q-2018. This is a great opportunity for us to leverage the learnings from the trial to develop the next generation 5G small cells architecture and shape the future products and technology, which will benefit the entire industry. We are committed to working with M1 to develop future technologies in keeping with their requirements and this initiative enables us to do the same,” said Mark Atkinson, Head of Small Cell, Nokia.

M1 and Huawei embark on first end-to-end 5G live tests in Singapore

SINGAPORE, 21 June 2018 – M1 Limited (M1) and Huawei today announced plans to jointly showcase innovative 5G use cases in Singapore, starting with the live demonstration of 360-view Virtual Reality (VR) content broadcast by end of June this year. The demonstration, using 5G equipment setup at M1’s MiWorld building in Jurong, is Singapore’s first end-to-end 5G live trial using Huawei’s 5G equipment operating at the 28GHz millimetre wave (mmWave) frequency band.

In the recent years, creative content and exciting new applications have been developed using immersive technologies and media such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) for training, education, corporate communication, marketing campaigns, public events and virtual tourism. These content and applications are extremely bandwidth-intensive and delay-sensitive, making them costly and technically challenging to stream or broadcast to a large number of users over existing cellular networks.

With the advent of 5G technology which supports enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) capabilities with theoretical peak download throughput exceeding 20 Gbps based on the 3GPP Standards, one potential 5G use case is the live streaming and broadcasting of VR/AR/MR content. In the future smart classroom, for example, teachers could use the 5G network to share a 360-view AR/VR/MR video to a classroom of students. This will capture their curiosity and imagination, aid information assimilation and retention, as well as make learning more interactive and interesting.

“This live demo is a small but significant step in our journey towards next generation 5G mobile networks. With the advancement in 5G and media technologies, immersive communication experience will continue to be enhanced and this will definitely have a profound impact on the way we work, learn, live and play in future Smart City,” said Mr Denis Seek, Chief Technical Officer, M1. “Singapore’s mobile networks are widely acknowledged as amongst the most advanced worldwide, and M1 is committed to staying at the forefront of 5G technology to ensure our consumers enjoy the best experience and latest smart applications. We look forward to working closely with Huawei to harness 5G for developing new innovative and demand-driven use cases and applications in Singapore.”

“We are pleased to partner with M1 on the 5G journey. Besides this end-to-end 5G live test, the companies plan to kick off the first 3.5GHz with Non-Standalone (NSA) standards compliance field trial in Southeast Asia by end 2018, as well as the first 28GHz and 3.5GHz with Standalone (SA) standards compliance field trial in South East Asia by mid-2019.

mmWave for 5G enhanced Mobile Broadband

One of the requirements defined by ITU for the fifth generation of mobile communications (5G) is enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) systems that should not only meet the significant requirements for capacity increase, but also address the needs for higher user data rates. Due to the huge amount of available spectrum in the higher spectrum bands, the utilisation of mmWave techniques is a promising way to achieve these rates.

The first phase of frequency allocation for 5G (aligned by 3GPP) includes both sub-6GHz and mmWave bands. For mmWave bands 3GPP has approved 26GHz, 28GHz, 39GHz and 42GHz in Release 15 for 5G New Radio (NR).

M1 partners SG Bike for smarter bike sharing geostation

SINGAPORE, 26 February 2018 - The geostation technology was first introduced by SG Bike in August 2017 to deter indiscriminate parking. Indiscriminate parking of shared bicycles by users has been an issue in recent months, with the authorities putting in more measures to ensure the population of bicycles are parked within designated parking places.

This collaboration to use NB-IoT network will further enhance SG Bike’s geostation technology to monitor with real-time communication to track and retrieve bicycles that are not parked within the designated bicycle parking zones. The indiscriminate parking of shared bikes along corridors, at bus-stops or even in lifts will soon be a thing of the past with SG Bike’s geostation technology.

Unlike current geo-fencing technologies used by most bike-sharing companies which utilises GPS coordinates, SG Bike’s geostation technology enables greater accuracy and control over indiscriminate parking of it shared bicycles through Radio-frequency identification (RFID). This is a significant milestone in encouraging responsible bike-sharing behaviour. Users can benefit from the provision of accurate data of bicycle location and availability, while operationally, SG Bike can better handle and respond to indiscriminately parked bicycles. Currently, SG Bike users who fail to return bicycles within the geostations are given a 15 minutes grace period to relocate the bicycle. With the geostation technology, users can also easily find bicycles at the designated parking places since the bicycles should only be picked up or returned at areas with a geostation. Potentially, the RFID technology deployed can be implemented onto other sharing devices, including umbrellas and scooters, to cultivate greater sharing society driven by real-time accurate data.

“We are thrilled to work with SG Bike to enable Singapore to truly benefit from the bike-sharing scheme, in an effort to accelerate our journey into a ‘car-lite’ society,” said Mr Alex Tan, Chief Innovation Officer, M1. “As a leading IoT service provider, we look forward to support SG Bike with the implementation of an efficient IoT solution nationwide to enhance the aesthetics of the city, as well as the safety and wellbeing of our communities.”

Chief Executive Officer of SG Bike, Mr Albert Teng said, “We are pleased to be in this partnership with M1, the first NB-IoT network operator in Singapore to explore using this licensed network to improve our services. We currently have over 1,300 geostations installed nationwide, and we are excited to see how this partnership can further improve our technology to help bike sharing become a success in Singapore.”

Narrowband Internet of Things (NB-IoT)

Only a small fraction of the billions of devices that can get connected are today – too inaccessible, too many, too expensive to be connected through traditional network technologies. To support their specialised needs, the GSMA aligned the industry behind the industrial grade low power wide area NB-IoT technology standard, which has been ratified by the 3GPP. Advantages of NB-IoT technology include low-bandwidth, robust indoor penetration and highly efficient power usage, complemented by the benefits of utilising licensed spectrum such as data integrity, user confidentiality and security. Global operator support for NB-IoT is strong, and with increased adoption and economies of scale, the cost of NB-IoT devices is expected to fall rapidly.

Radio-frequency identification (RFID)

RFID is an asset location technology that utilises radio frequency transmitters to radiate radio frequencies where nearby RFID tags will return corresponding radio frequencies. RFID tags can be read with a high degree of accuracy at a limited distance. These properties are ideal to be deployed to determine if bicycles are properly parked at designated parking spaces. RFID is made to track assets that move through choking points. In the case of bicycle sharing, chokepoints are places such as major transport nodes during peak periods. Therefore, the above qualities make RFID technology the preferred technology over other asset tracking technologies in determining indiscriminately parked bicycles.
