M1 boosts network speed to 1Gbps with Nokia’s Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) SolutionSINGAPORE, 17 December 2018 – M1 Limited (M1) and Nokia today announced that they have completed the Licensed Assisted Access (LAA) small cells trial and achieved close to 1Gbps network download speed.
With the high adoption of advanced smart devices in Singapore, customer demand for data continues to grow, driven by faster networks and high-bandwidth mobile applications for social media, as well as video and music streaming services. M1 continues to invest in expanding capacity and delivering superior network performance to support this growing demand for data services.
During the trial, Nokia’s advanced LAA Air Scale small cell, which aggregates up to four carriers and combines up to four multiple transmission paths, achieved a download peak speed close to 1Gbps. Leveraging on the advanced interworking capabilities of LAA and precise planning and design carried out by M1’s engineers and Nokia’s service experts, the solution provides 4.5G technology in the unlicensed 5GHz spectrum band, which complements well with M1’s existing licensed band and is able to co-exist with WiFi networks using the same 5GHz spectrum.
M1’s Heterogeneous Network (HetNet), the largest in Singapore with more than 500 integrated small cells and WiFi access points deployed at traffic hotspots throughout Singapore including MRT/ LRT stations, bus interchanges, major commercials buildings and malls and other popular outdoor areas, will also be enhanced with Nokia’s LAA capabilities.
With the advanced LAA solution, M1 is able to improve data bandwidth at high-traffic hotspots, minimise network congestion and continue to deliver high data speed to M1 customers at crowded places. The deployment will also enrich customers’ experience by ensuring a seamless coverage and uninterrupted mobile service across M1’s cellular and WiFi network.
Mr Denis Seek, Chief Technical Officer, M1 said, “Through this latest trial with our long-term technology partner Nokia, we reiterate our commitment in applying latest technologies to provide our customers with the best possible cellular and WiFi experience on the move. M1 customers will continue to enjoy an even better user experience through M1’s advanced 4G+ mobile network.”
“We are thrilled to achieve another new technology milestone that differentiates M1 as an innovation leader in the region. With this live network trial, Nokia has proven once again that our technology is helping M1 build the networks of the future, transforming and enriching the overall end-user experience.” said Mr Mark Atkinson, Head of Small Cells, Nokia.
Earlier this year, M1 and Nokia announced plans to conduct Nokia’s first 5G small cell trial in Southeast Asia to showcase demand-driven 5G use cases in selected vertical industries, which marked an important milestone in M1 and Nokia’s joint efforts in staying at the forefront of technology developments. Last year, M1 together with Nokia, also deployed Southeast Asia’s first nationwide commercial Narrowband-Internet of Things (NB-IoT) network, to catalyse smart solutions innovation, supporting Singapore’s transformation into a Smart Nation.

M1 and Jurong Port to collaborate in creation of a Smart Next Generation Multipurpose PortSINGAPORE, 5 December 2018 – M1 Limited (M1) today inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Jurong Port to provide a terminal-wide wireless private network, to support the transformation of the port into an advanced digital Smart Port. The MOU was signed between M1’s Chief Corporate Sales and Solutions Officer, Mr Willis Sim and Jurong Port’s Chief Commercial Officer and Chairman of Technology Development Committee, Mr Desmond Lim.
Jurong Port plays a significant role in Singapore's economic growth and has been a cornerstone in the country's development as a global hub port. To promote greater connectivity and operational efficiency in Jurong Port, M1 will leverage on its Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) to enhance the network coverage in the terminal and along the port’s berths, using licensed 4G spectrum for the wireless private network.
“The heterogenous network solution is aligned with Jurong Port’s strategic technology roadmap and this partnership will further equip Jurong Port with the technological platform for the Internet-of-Things (IoT)/ wearables endeavours and autonomous drones exploration.” said Mr Sam Wei Hoong, Vice President of Information Technology, Jurong Port.
“M1 is delighted to collaborate with Jurong Port to harness our strengths and expertise in info-communications and network connectivity, to advance Singapore’s port business operations and productivity. As a leading communications services provider, we will continue to support Singapore’s Smart Nation initiatives, as well as to innovate and bring fresh solutions to cater to evolving needs in the digital economy.” said Mr Willis Sim, Chief Corporate Sales and Solutions Officer, M1.
M1 will tap on its expertise to improve connectivity in the port by providing commercially proven wireless backhaul network connectivity to the warehouses and access-layer in individual warehouses. The port will also enjoy wireless access solution with enhanced 4G coverage and WiFi network along the berths and 4G connectivity to the port’s data centre via a private Access Point Name (APN), as well as round-the-clock monitoring and technical support provided by M1.
Using licensed 4G spectrum to support the wireless private network not only eliminates potential interference issues but also allows the port to tap on the private network’s security features for internal communications and transmissions, as well as to leverage on the cellular technologies for use case testing on smart applications, sensors, analytics and other IoT applications.
Mr Denis Seek, Chief Technical Officer, M1 elaborated, “In future, more IoT and smart solutions will be developed which demand greater reliability, much lower network latency and massive connectivity of sensors. Leveraging on our experience in deploying a private HetNet at Jurong Port on a dense cell grid architecture, we will be well positioned to harness exciting new 5G capabilities and pilot innovative digital smart port use cases when 5G technology becomes mature in the coming years.”
“We are delighted with the partnership with M1. As Singapore’s Next Generation Multipurpose Port, an inter-connected port with high speed solutions is key to improved productivity and efficiency, bringing benefits to all our customers and port users, and enhancing our port’s overall competitiveness.” said Mr Desmond Lim, Chief Commercial Officer and Chairman of Technology Development Committee, Jurong Port.
